Rocco Siffredi is still smarting from an earlier controversy, the sex scene with Caroline Ducey in Romance (1999). It was, he recalls, a tense day. “There was a little altercation and I had to leave the set to calm down,” he says. “Caroline seemed to be scared of me and was crying. When I came back I couldn’t get an erection, it was horrible. But then something happened and I started to get my powers back and she put a condom on me and I took her. “After that scene it caused a lot of trouble. She called me in Italy and told me I was crazy for telling people we had sex. I had to tell her I knew when I had sex.” (IMDb)

As it emerged years later, the rape scene did not have to be staged. In fact, Caroline Ducey alleges that Catherine Breillat told the male actor (a nonprofessional man cast shortly before) to try to penetrate the actress on camera. “Catherine asked me to take my pants off like five minutes before we started shooting,” Ducey said in a 2022 interview. “I was getting ready to act. I didn’t think it could actually happen. I was about to kill that guy.” Ducey said he pushed him away, and Breillat stopped filming; they completed the scene, without penetration, on the second take. That’s the one in the film. “I got really mad at Catherine, because I didn’t need to stage the scene like that at all,” Ducey said. When asked about Ducey’s allegations, Breillat fired back, sharing an original shooting script from the production that she says detailed the specifics of the scene. “Caroline’s allegation is extremely serious, but I completely deny it,” she said in an emailed statement after Ducey’s interview. “From the beginning, ‘Romance’ was billed as the first European film with unsimulated sex scenes. The script itself was very explicit, with abundant details that left no doubt about the nature of the scenes to be shot. I wrote the script long before I cast Caroline, and it clearly outlined all the scenes, including the rape scene, so there could be no surprises or cheating for her.” Breillat had previously revealed that in that scene, “the problem was that the actor couldn’t get into shape.” [aroused]. But even if it had gone all the way, the scene couldn't have been more realistic.” (IMDb)
